Question:

I have gnats in my house but not just in one room.. does standing water or rotten wood cause them?

the gnats hang around in my bathroom and in the den around my comp desk...

  1. I suspect that the gnats could be termites instead.  They love wet, rotting wood.  Standing water would breed mosquito larva.  Also, could they be fruit flies?  Do you have fruit or fruit scraps lying around or in the trash?  If they are termites, you need a professional exterminator.  That's a serious structural problem (yes, termites fly).  Mosquitoes can infect you with West Nile, so get rid of standing water.  If fruit flies, put fruit in fridge or scraps outside to compost pile or trash can, otherwise you'll have a ton of maggots and flies.  


  2. Yes standing water attracts them. One thing gnats hate is peppermint oil, try putting cotton balls soaked in peppermint oil in your den & in your bathroom.  Anything with yeast in it attracts them also... in case you get them in your kitchen area.  

  3. First, you don't have termites... gnats will breed in any wet / saturated areas. First place to check would be any potted plants, look at the top of the soil with a bright flashlight, if fungus gnats are there you will see them

  4. standing water is the cause try hedgeballs
