  1. Not a bad idea to wax them. If you're going to grind with them I wouldn't worry about the edges just yet, they dont need to be too sharp and if you grind they won't stay sharp anyhow.


  2. Most definitely you need to hot wax them, several times before the bases are truly saturated and will hold a thin layer.  Go ahead and use them between each hot wax and do it every 2-3 days of use.  I'd also sharpen the edges with a 1x1 bevel and then dull out the area under foot where you would be sliding.  This should leave  enough edge on the shovel and the tail to hold on hardpack and still allow you to slide.  Hope this helps.

  3. I would go and get them properly serviced at somewhere like Ellis Brighams, then buy yourself a pot of "notwax" teflon stuff for when you are on holilday.  You can just rub it on your skis every couple of days and it'll help you keep sharper turns, etc.
