I have got a site. how can I add my site to search engines like google, yahoo etc?

I have tried in the [ http://www.google.com/addurl/ ] but this doesnt work.

When you say it didn't work, did it just freeze up, not load or did it return the screen that said  your site would be indexed.?  It takes times for sites to appear in the search index, and without proper optimization you may never see your site. Just submitting doesnt guarantee a listing.

Do you have a sitemap ? this gives a listing of pages on the website that search engines look for, check out Google Web tools to find a sitemap generator etc.  Do you have good keywords, and are you pages titled properly and does your content contain your main key words?

You probably want to see your rankings on keywords. First check "site:www.domain.com" to see if you are indexed in Google. Then participate in Google Webmaster Tools and create an XML sitemap so you can assist Google in indexing your site. Then pick up the book Search Engine Marketing Inc and follow the SEO advice. You will see your rankings increase in Google in a couple of months if you take the time to SEO your site.

You just have to give it some time. Once you submit sometimes it takes months. Go back once a week and re-submit your url and it should get picked up quickly.
