  1. Depending on which motherboard you're using, it might be possible to go into the BIOS and manually set the RAM speed to 533 MHz, though the motherboard should automatically default to 533 MHz since it's the slower of the two speeds. You also need to make sure that they're both the same type. For example, if your motherboard uses DDR SDRAM, both modules need to be DDR SDRAM. If you have an older computer, it's also possible that your motherboard can't use more than 1 GB of RAM.

In any case, it's usually not a good idea to use two different speeds as it tends to cause problems like the one you're having. Try taking the 533 MHz module out and see if your PC will boot. If so, just stick with that (or add another 667 MHz module if you want more RAM). If not, take the 667 MHz stick out and put the 533 MHz one back in.

Also, you're generally not going to have all of your RAM available for use. Even if you get all1.5 GB working, somewhere between 128 and 256 MB will most likely be missing because the OS uses part of your RAM for other purposes. For example, if you have onboard graphics, part of your RAM is used for displaying video. It's not because the RAM is bad, but if you want to test it anyway download MemTest86, burn it to a CD and boot to it.

  2. You can't!!

RAM is where the open programs are stored while the computer is on. If you only have a few programs, then you will have free RAM.

This is a good sign - not a bad one!!

If your computer is slow, it's probably because of your processor. Consider getting a better one.

  3. make sure the larger stick is in slot 1 and smaller in slot 2 etc etc.

and it isn't very wise to use two sticks of different mhz because the mobo will only put enough power to power the ram with less mhz, as to not overload it by powering the larger mhz.

and if your computer is only picking up 450mb, then you probably have bad ram. time to upgrade, friend.

  4. not unless they allow stepping to different speeds.
