What should I do? Considering that I am having a baby in 2 weeks (yay!) and that I live pretty far from downtown, should I invest in starting my own design firm? I have a degree in design management and interior design and I feel like I am ready for this. The only thing that concerns me is whether I will have clients. I live in a well developed mid-class - high-end area. Do you think it's worth investing in it? I will have to spend money on advertising, and as we all know the first months or even year/s in a business can be slow. But this will allow me to stay home with my baby and only take him to a daycare or to my moms on the days I chose to work.

My other choice would be getting a job in downtown or somewhere further from my house. But doing this I will spend a lot of money on gas and on day care (5 days a week).

What would you do??

  1. i would recommend talking to perspective employers and seeing if anyone is willing to hire you to work from home, or possibly a few days a week.

starting your own firm is a wonderful idea, but even though business might be slow, you'll be spending more time at the office making sure the firm is getting off the ground then you would usually spend working on projects.

i think if you're really dedicated to starting your own firm, consider bringing a partner in on it (especially since you're having a baby so soon). maybe a partner would allow you to work from home and spend less time in the office for the first few months. good luck.
