Our house doesn't have a basement.

They sell camping heaters that are tent safe.

  1. I say go for it, I did.  I designed a beautiful little replica of our home and my hubby built it for me in the backyard.  So far, the response from the neighbors has been nothing but positive, everyone thinks it is so cute and they want one too.  Mine isn't so rustic and it isn't mobile, but the examples of what you want to build are charming, too.  Who cares what anyone else thinks?  I enjoy mine every day whether I even go into it or not, it is adorable to look at and I love it, that is all that matters.

  2. Interesting - so whats your question? lol

  3. doesn't seem like you could go there in the winter.  have you thought of moving out, or making the basement into an apartment so you can have your own private space?

  4. We have a shed in our back yard.  When you get into it, you find that it is paneled with nice but inexpensive wood paneling. It is carpeted, and has tile on the ceiling.  It has a window that can be opened.  Window is screened. There is electricity.   I am sure that it didn't cost much to do this. It was all set up and furnished when we bought this place.

It is furnished with a double bed, a TV and VCR, a bookcase,  and a rocker.  I go out there to spend a quiet afternoon. Or, send the kids out there to watch a DVD, to get them out from underfoot.  It also is a handy extra bedroom for guests.  No heater or AC, but you can bring out a little ceramic heater, if needed.  It works well to heat up the little room.  A 20" box fan, the screened door and window are enough to keep it cool enough, too.

There isn't a bathroom, but we bring out a pail, which serves the purpose.

Grandkids and I camp out there, sometimes.  Stay up late watching a movie.  Bring sandwiches out for a snack.

More people than not in our town have these little sheds in their yards for extra bedroom space.  Most of them are fixed up nice on the outside, too.  Mine matches the house, has nice trim, and the curtains in the window are kinda cute.  We have flowerbeds on 2 sides.  No one thinks these places are dumb.
