Or do I need to still lay sand down still and pour on top of sand? I would like to keep the final grade level where its at right now, but thats not set in stone. If I do need to pour on top of compacted sand, should excavate a foot out of my compacted fill and pour sand inside and compact and then go from there? Any ideas would help, trying to get as many view points as possible.

Thanks

  1. is sand the best base for your project? have you looked at gravel as a base?

sand may wash out ,gravel seems like it would be more stable for the longer period of time.

  2. Your compaction at 24" intervals is correct and depending on where you are your fill or AB sounds OK.  If you want to be absolutely positive have a soil survey/engineering firm test the fill, compaction and moisture content.  This won't cost you more than $200 and you'll get a official approval and report.

  3. No, by what you describe it sounds like an ideal base to pour a concrete pad on.   Just remember to put seaming around the edges (where they butt a concrete wall), and to put in relief cuts, to keep the inherent cracks straight.   And slope it, 1/8 to 1/4" per ft, to force run-off.
