I have heard Germans think extremely rigid. how?

Sounds like a cultural stereotype to me. I'm half-German, I don't consider myself a "rigid" thinker. You should look up National Character studies that were done in the first half of the 20th century.

I've been around some Germans lately and they didn't seem that way to me.  They were nice, polite and easy to work with.

The Germanic people have had a very hard life. Looking all te way back before the middle ages it has always been a fight to survive! From many hard wars, weather conditions, and economics. Germans have a history by surviving by being strong. From parent to child it is taught as a way of life.

1 crimes are harshly punished, they still have public executions.there is no standered for prisons except to keep prisoners alive until there court date if they get one

2 Boys who are chosen to be solders are trained from the time they are 10 years old

3 They are a very direct people. They say what they mean and are willing to fight for it

So in conclusion between history and the delicate flowers of America, yes the Germans are ridged, but it has always saved them and made them who they are today.

I think that we all have our own lifesyles depending on where we live and how we are brought up.My neighbour is German and is a lovely lady but she has a habit of self containment that appears to have been from her upbringing, she has told me that her parents were very strict as were her friends also,and althought she has lived here in Aussie for over 40 years she has never been able to lose that trait.I dont know if that applies to all Germans I can only observe what I see.
