I have heard that a doctor may tie your tubes if you are a single mother having a miscarriage?

I have heard this a few times now and I am kind of worried. I was dumb enough to get pregnant from a one night stand, however I miscarried a couple of months later. I had no insurance, and they did nothing but put me on morphine and let me ride it out. They tried to send me home without doing a DNC, but a nurse fought to keep me in the hospital and get it done. That was about two years ago, now my husband and I want a kid, but I am afraid of this rumor about getting tubes tied without consent. I know they have to have my consent to do any procedure, but I was incredibly drugged up and they made me sign things that I could not comprehend at the time because of the drugs they put me on. Has anyone heard of this happening? If you are not going to help me then do not try to answer my question, so no talk about paranoia, or any smart *** remarks

That sounds ridiculous to me.  Who are they to say you have to be married to have kids?  I have 2 kids and I'm a single mom, and I raise them a h**l of a lot better than some married folks I know.

If that were to happen, I'd smell a huge lawsuit in the air!!

I've never heard of this.  They can't do anything to you without your consent, so if they actually did something then you can sue the pants off of them at least.  I'm sure you're untouched.

ive had a few d n c due to placenta left behind etc etc

its impossible to tie ur tubes without cutting u open. they can not do it via ur treasure chest key hole ok

i know lots of girls who got their tubes tied they had to have key hole surgery through their stomach in 3 places.

another was when c section performed

In order to tie your tubes they would have had to perform surgery.  And, no matter how much morphine they'd given you, I'm sure you would have noticed that you'd been taken into surgery, and had a  surgical incision. (Is there a small scar around your belly button?  If not, you didn't have a tubal.)

Return to the hospital and demand your records. It is not legally possible without your consent, but as you were not in the best situation at the time and may have signed papers, you will not know until you see your records. Otherwise, please speak to a doctor and have a scan to see. Best of luck to you both.

This is an absurd rumor.  Not only would it be highly unethical, but also extremely illegal.  

Did you have incisions in your abdomen?  A tubal ligation involves abdominal incisions.

If you are concerned, consult the hospital this occured at and get a copy of your medical records.  You can also discuss the issue with your OB/GYN but I assure you that you do not have anything to worry about in regards to this issue.

EDITED TO ADD:  It would have to be your INFORMED consent, unless it was an emergency situation they would not have been able to gt your consent if you were "doped up".  

Get a copy of your medical records, though.

then you would have a huge lawsuit on your hands and would come out loaded.  first of all...they cant make you sign anything when you are drugged like that so if you even signed to anything like that, they would be in trouble.  I am a dental hygienist and if I feel my patients dont fully understand what they are consenting to, I cannot proceed with treatment.  same would go for them.  I mean how many people would go in for a dnc and be like "please tie my tubes while your at it?"  and if this is something thats happened a few times then it would be well known in the court system.  I wouldnt worry too much about it really.  chances are it didnt happen

If they had, they would have been ethically and legally bound to tell you they did and what their medical reason was for doing it.  You probably would have noticed if they gave you surgery as well.  I don't think you have anything to worry about, but if this is weighing on your mind and causing you stress, see a doctor and be sure that you are healthy.

Ive never heard of that happening but im sure it does happen!  I would talk to an OB doc and see if they can check to see if yours are tied or not...thats the first thing I would do.  If they are then you need to find out what happened when you were at the hospital...I think you have a right to your own hospital records.  I wouldnt worry too much unless you are TTC and its just not happening.  If it did happen you an always get it reversed and have babies!

What?  I have never, ever heard anything like that.  And I tell you what, any doctor that was every caught doing that would lose his license.  There is no way this is true.  An urban legend.

I just can't imagine what kind of hospital has you sign documents while you are on medication. Usually you sign when you go in and then when you leave.

I have personally not heard of this happening but I am sure that it probably has like in the free clinics where they know if the person has no way to fight back or prove they didn't actually consent.
