I have heard that the Greek island of Hydra is very special.Why?

Since Hydra is located close to Athens, in the past, many rich Athenians vacated there and built big houses and etc. It also used to be the home of many rich ship owners and painters. It also used as a service section for the Greek navy, and as a result, it starred in the sea commerce with neighbouring countries and in communications.  Towards the end of the 18th century, Hydra was bloomming in export trade and commerce. From the decade of 1950 Hydra was discovered by artists and producers of movies and since then the island was transformed to a cosmopolitan and to a beautiful tourist center :)

So close to Athens,no cars,wonder full night life, I was vacationing there a few years back,not any more cause I need peace and quiet while vacationing these days.(I'm getting old and cheap).Yia sou.

Well, it played a very important role during the War of Independence, mostly by contributing ships. Many naval commanders of the War were from Hydra.

And, since 1830, five Prime Ministers of Greece were Hydriots.

ADDED: In Hydra, no cars or motorbikes are allowed. If you want to go somewhere, you can go on foot, on a donkey or by "sea taxi". Isn't that nice? :)
