I have connected the correct cable and have selected VGA source on the tv. Do I have to change the settings of my laptop to generate to an external monitor?

  2. Yes you do....go into your control panel and turn it on.

  3. Most laptops have a function key (the keys at the top) that enables the VGA output.  Every laptop is different, so you may have to read the little labels on the function keys.   A good way to check to see if the laptop is putting out a VGA signal is to connect a regular computer monitor to it and see if there is an output.

The other problem may be that the laptop is putting out too high resolution signal for the TV.  That can be changed in control panel - display - settings.  Lower the screen resolution settings.  That may help.
