I have installed the IIS7.0 on my Vista Home Premium.

How can I get the DNS service? It didn't install the DNS server.

Please help me. Is it possible for me to use an external DNS management software which is not from Microsoft?

Thanks.

  1. DNS isn't part of Vista.  You don't need a DNS server it to run IIS on Vista.  You'll use your ISPs or your private network's DNS as appropriate.  DNS handles FQDN to IP resolution on outbound traffic.

If you're going to host a website on Vista of course you'll need a public DNS 'A' record that points to your public IP address but you don't need to install your own DNS server to handle that.  If you need a free dynamic DNS service, check out Sitelutions at http://www.sitelutions.com  It's a bit kudgy setting it up, but it works well once you've figured it out and you can't beat the price.  They also provide a client you can run behind your firewall that will keep your DNS records up-to-date.  They allow TTLs as low as 60 seconds so even if your public IP address changes frequently you'll always be live on the net.  I've been using them for years now.

  2. The DNS server is only available on Windows Server operating systems. You'll have to use a Windows DNS server, though I don't know of any good ones.
