Question:

I have installed vinyl tiles over previous vinyl tiles?

The new tiles are 1 1/2 times larger squares and laid differently. Still, some of the edges lift up and don't stick properly. I made sure that the floor was clean and smooth before I installed. What should I do? Should I buy vinyl glue? would that work?

  1. It sounds like you installed 12" or 13" peel&stick tiles over old 9" tiles.

If I am wrong tell me, maybe I can help more.

The new tiles may be lifting because they don't stick well to the hard to remove wax buildup on the old tile. More than likely though they are not sticking because peel and stick tiles rarely work well, even over the best subfloor. The few times I have installed peel and stick, I used vct glue as well. A general purpose sheet flooring adhesive and a 1/16"x1/16" trowel should work fine. Allow the glue to get tacky on the surface before setting the tile.

If you are only having the problem is a few areas, contact cement gel will suffice. Again, allow the contact cement to dry to the light touch before affixing the tile.

  2. You could try it - altenatively some contact adhesive if you can get sufficient space for the adhesive to go 'off'. Some glues will not dry when used between two impervious layers.
