Question:

I have interviewed, but no response. How do I follow up?

I interviewed almost 3 weeks ago for a job. I was under the impression that I would be called back for a second interview with others in management, but I haven't heard anything. I followed up with a letter, but no response to that either. If I'm not being called back, why are companies so rude? Yes or no is pretty simple, I'd think. Should I call/email? Should I tell them I have another offer, even if I don't? I'd really like this job, and it seems like a good fit. TIA!

  1. You could always give them a call. I don't think there is a need to lie about having an offer.

Sometimes it takes a while for companies to get back after an interview, but other times they really won't ever tell you yes or no.

I would definitely keep looking for other positions. I always get job offers after I already have a job!

  2. At 3 weeks it is acceptable to follow up with a phone call. Say something like "Hello, this is Bob Smith. I interviewed with you on July 2nd and I wanted to touch base to see if there is any more information you may need." If you have some experience, skill, or education that makes you well suited for the job, try to find a way to bring it up (it will also make you more rememberable). Be prepared for two possibilities: they have already hired or they say they have not made a decision yet. If they have not decided politely convince them while you are better qualified (or a better fit) than other applicants.

As someone who just recently ended a 7 month job search, I can tell you companies are real bad about letting you know of their decision. How hard would a letter or email be? Apparently it is extremely hard for them.

    Good luck!
