I have just adopted 2 dwarf hamsters but they tend to scrach a lot?

ive given them flee protection and there coats are prefect, no sign of any problems. is this normal behaviour ? they do swabble from time to time but other than that everything is fine. one is very active and the other tends to take its time but eats and drinks well.

Ignore first answerer - 'black adder' he is totally wrong.

It sounds to me like they have been fighting and like they maybe have mights and not flees. May i suggest you contact your vet in order to make a proper diagnoses, and get proper treatment it might not be none of the above but it is better to be safe than sorry. It may also be the bedding i would change to a different type see if it has any effect. As sometimes hamsters can be allergic to the type of bedding you use.

It could be also because they are washing when infact you think there scratching. ( lots of hamster owners get mixed up )

If you are sure they do not have mites, then check their bedding. It could be giving them allergy and making them scratch the fur. The best bedding is Carefresh and aspen shavings. Beddings like cedar or pine can give them allergy and scratching.

Dwarf hamsters groom themselves a lot and many people think they are scratching but actually they are cleaning themselves. Maybe you have mistaken their grooming for scratching?

Change their bedding to rule out allergy and make sure that they do not have mites, otherwise, as long as they are healthy, no need to worry.

This is normal behaviour for dwarf hamsters, they do scratch a lot.

It can also be a sign that they are a little too warm.
