I have just bought a bird table that needs some preserver on it. What can I use which is safe for birds?

Any Water based Fenceing paint Cuprinol,or the cheapest is own brand B&Q.Homebase,etc.

Make sure it has dried out for at least 3 days,before you put food onto it.

use a selected water-based preservative such as Fenceguard or Sadolin and make sure that it is dry before use....or check at your local DIY store to see if they have any other different products
