We purchased this colt in april (in Australia) and have discovered that he has a small insect/mite/louse on his coat. None of our other horses has this including the 2 horses that were purchased with him. Does anyone have any ideas as to what they might be and how to remove them?

thanks in advance

  1. This is a free site, that you will enjoy and find helpful for many issues of horse management>

( the lice article is featured on that page)

Your Ivermectin Dewormer will take care of any lice. Just the normal dose.

Equine lice won't bother people..However, you will likely need to deworm all of your horses with the Ivemctin wormer.as a preventative.

Your feed dealer will also have powder and spray for the lice, if you have already dewormed.

  2. "As an extra tip when you bathe your horse use medicated dog shampoo. This removes mites, lice and other horrid things like bot fly eggs and can help alleviate sweet itch without the expense of buying a medicated horse shampoo that does the same thing!"

I'm always looking for ways to save money, especially with the expense of horses as it is, so hopefully this is a tip you can utilize!

  3. disinfect everything (walls, bruses, flooring, etc) , seperate the colt from everyone else.  you'll need some baby shampoo for a bath.  you'll need some fresh garlic, rosewater, lavendar oil (food grade), lemon juice, mint oil (food grade), sesame oil and safflower oil.  don't forget to deworm, too.

fill a small sprayer about 1/2 the way full with a 50/50 sesame oil and safflower oil.  take your garlic, break it open, and take out a "fold" of garlic.  cut a small peice from it, and crush it.  put the crused garlic into the oil.

in a seperate cup add 30 drops rosewater, 20 drops lavendar, 10 drops lemon juice, and 10 drops mint oil.   add to the oil, and let it sit for at least 1 hr before using it.

usually you'll find the parasite in the mane and tail.  start there with baby shampoo.  scrub in really well, let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes.  this will make the insects not be able to move.  go in with a lice comb to remove what you can, dunking them into water.  rinse your colt well, and  spray your homemade stuff on, work it into the hair and skin really well.

you'll want to spray this and work it in at least 2 times/day.

so sorry that you're going thru this.  best of luck with this, and i hope this will help.
