  1. if your in uk, you will have three reds in the fitting these are 1 from previous light  1 to next light  1 to switch , they should all be in the same connector. there will be 3 black or blues two are connected together the third is the return from the switch and should have a red sleeve on it, this connects to the cable to your light bulb fitting, the other bulb wire goes to the blue connection.

  2. If you wired it up correctly, I would say you have a bad switch. If it is single pole switch (2 wires blk) turn the breaker off to the light. Take the cover plate off switch and the other 2 screws holding the switch in. Make sure power is off remove one of the wires from switch either one, tape it or place wire nut on it. Turn breaker back on, if light is out, bad switch if light still on you wired it wrong.

Warning do at your own risk.

  3. I recommend going to a home improvement store, and asking for a continuity tester.  Turn the power off to the light at the panel.  Pull the light apart and find the switch leg.  Use the continuity tester to see if you have it.  You will need some one to help you (you don't have to have help, but it beats going up and down the ladder).  With the switch off you shouldn't get a reading.  Have the switch turned on your tester should let you know it is now on when you have found the right one (it will go on and off with the switch).  Keep track of the ones from the switch, you do not want to get them mixed up.  Take the other wires in the box and tap all of the whites together (including the one from the light) but not the one from the switch.  Now tap all the blacks together, but not the one from the light.  Take the whiter from the switch and tap it to the black wires in the box.  Now take the black from the switch and tap it to the black from the light.  Turn the power on and test, it should work if done right.

  4. You most likely crossed the wires when you were hooking it up.When you cross them there is no way to shut the power to the light off.You will need to cut the power, and rewire the light.

  5. In a typical American home, a light fixture will be wired with a black and a white wire, maybe a bare copper wire for a ground.  The black wire is your hot and the white is your neutral.  If you wired the new fixture like the old one was wired, you shouldn't have a problem.  Is your light switch turned off?
