I have just rotavated my garden in readiness for laying a new lawn. What do I need to do next.?

  1. Best thing to do next is just prepare the area a little more by breaking up any large lumps and removing any stones. Make sure everything is level by using a turfing rake - top tip - dont do this when ground is too wet - it will make life easier.

    Dont step on the area to lay the turf but lay planks over and then lay the first row - make sure you work along the longest length of the area so to avoid more cuts at ends. Then just carry on with following rows. Hope this helps!


  2. I think John explains it as well as anyone needs. As a GARDEN, certainly in the tilling, you might want to remove anything that would possibly continue to root, sprout, grow, as well as create a fine top layer of soil. I'll assume by Lay a lawn you mean install sod. Working from out to in, I don't really see a need for planking, as sod should be as stable initially as it will ever be, after the fact.

      Also assuming it was a garden, hopefully with a decent soil content already, you probably want the new install, to be flush with the existing lawn. Raking/grading can accomplish that.
