Deck is 13X15, posts are 6X6's, posts are knotched on both sides. Is 1 bolt on each rim joist enough to hold it, or are 2 required?

  1. listen to coolc  hes got it right on

  2. Woodwerks got it right.... one will act like an axel and the post will move.

  3. 2 are required along a diagonal line to stabilize the joist in 2 directions. otherwise, a single bolt would act more like an 'axle'

  4. Good job notching the posts, actually since the post is holding all of the weight, the bolt is just holding the 2" x12" to the post so I would put 3 carriage bolts in just to keep the 2" x 12" from twisting or warping. Stagger them.

  5. when in doubt go the safest route. 2 carriage bolts are the safest way and in some state they are required. make sure you space them vertically at least 5 inches apart . this will make for better support and will keep the rim joist from warping. also make sure you put washers on the carriage bolts, and the carriage bolts should be galvanized to protect against rust.
