They are just now blooming, with a few small tomatoes on them.I live in nc and it usually stays fairly warm thru sept. These are the huge tomatoes that have a yellow strip thru them that I was hoping to can. If it gets cold befor the produce is there some kind of little tents i can get to put around them or can i make my own some way to save money?

  1. normally people make like little tents on them with like blankets or towels or wire and then just have them in the little tent and then cover them up and they will grow fairly large.

  2. You should be ok to oct even lat oct if the season starts slow. But to make your own i just spray them with a hose in the eve that might get frost and then cover with news paper. In the early spring when my 4000 apple trees are blooming sometimes we have a late frost in the spring that can knock off the blooms i simply hook up the sprayer on the tractor and work thru the night spraying the apples with water. The water protects against freeze on the fruit. You can do the same with the mators.news paper works always even if you dont spray the plants. You can find stuff to use online at heneryfields they have something called wall of water its for early planting but im sure it will work well for your late plants aswell.Ps you im sure have pleanty of time to get a large crop mine are just now turning red.. its best to let the fruit rippen on the vine.By letting them sit in rippen off the vine causes sugars in the fruit or vegi to turn to starch.Making any fruit not as good.

  3. if its going to freeze at night put a blanket over them or wrap them in polly and seal it up then remove during the day  you can remove them when there green to and they will ripen on there own
