I have learnt a lot, says Alex Hales after his knock against West Indies – Cricket News Update
Having scored a solid half-century against West Indies in a Super 8 fixture of the ICC World T20 2012 at Pallekele, Alex Hales, the England opener, claims that he has learnt a lot during the innings, although the opener failed to help his side cross the
line.
The lanky Middlesex batsman, having impressed the selectors in County cricket, made his way to the international arena last year against the touring Indian team. Since then, the right-hander has been a permanent member of the England T20 squad but is yet
to be tested in the game’s other two formats.
Hales came to the limelight after smashing a 99 against West Indies at Nottingham earlier this year, helping his side chase down a stiff target.
Replying to Darren Sammy and company’s 179 last night, England were in trouble at one stage, having lost two wickets in the very first over. However, Hales consolidated the innings for the Poms, scoring 68 runs off just 51 deliveries, in which he struck
five boundaries and a couple of sixes.
Batting for a long period in Sri Lankan conditions against a top-class bowling attack, in Hales opinion, has helped him a lot, and the experience will be helpful for the batsman in future.
"It's a huge learning curve. I obviously wanted to go out there and do as well as I could for England. Unfortunately I didn't manage to see the team over the line, but I felt I've learned and grown as a player from it," he feels.
On the other side of the coin, Johnson Charles, the young West Indies opener, who was named as the Player of the Match for his stunning 56-ball 84, expressed that opening the batting alongside a legend such as Chris Gayle, is an honour for him.
"It feels very good. We basically want to win the tournament and it feels good to do well. Steven Finn was difficult to score off, you had to spend time in the middle before scoring runs," said the St Lucia cricketer. "It's great to play with Gayle, it's
just a matter of staying with him and the runs will come."
