Left work last month to become a full time mum, and am now wondering if I should be paying tax on bank accounts etc. I am not claiming jobseekers allowance either. If anyone could clarify me on all this I'd be very grateful, as tax etc. confuses the h**l out of me!!

  1. The trouble is most income is taxed at source and it is difficult to get it paid gross. You will not be liable for tax if your total income is less than the single persons allowance.

  2. Tax is based on tax years.  If your total income between 6th April 2008 and 5th April 2009 will be less than £5,435, you won't pay any income tax this year.  You can ask your bank to pay interest without deducting tax.  If any tax is deducted, you can claim it back through your local tax office.

  4. You dont have to pay anyone anything! full stop

  5. You might want to ask about NI payments. Just pop into the jobcentre or call Citizens Advice. Job done!!

  6. For this year, it depends on earnings from 06/04/08 until the time you left your job. If your total income for the year will be less than £5435, you can complete form R85 for each bank/building society account. This will allow interest to be paid gross.

If tax has already been deducted, you can claim refund on interest at end of tax year (5th April) by completing form R40. If you are due repayment on wages, you can claim now by completing form P50.

  7. tax is based on you working a whole year april to april so if you have stopped work partly through the year you may be entitled to a tax rebate. phone the tax office.
