Question:

I have lost the keys to my Car!!! Expert Locksmith Advice, Please!

I have lost the keys to my 1992 Mercury Cougar!! What is the most reasonable way to go about getting a new set? There is a slight chance that they may have been locked in the trunk. I am quite unsure of this and would hate to spend extra money for a locksmith to open it and have them not be there! Could I pick the lock? Could I have a new set made for a reasonable price? How does this process work? Because this is an older car is there any other options worth taking into account? Are there any special tricks or devices that I would be thankful to know about?

If you have gone through this kind of experience and have some advice to share, I would so very much appreciate it!!!

  1. you might be able to access the trunk by taking the rear seat back out. if you can't locate keys, go to auto parts store (autozone or advance auto) and buy a new ignition lock cylinder. it will come with keys. then have a mechanic install it for you

  2. Do you live in a nice neighborhood? If so, the police might be willing to come unlock your car for you for free.

  3. Any FML dealer parts store can be of help with you showing ID and title or registration card to obtain key codes for cutting another set of keys.

  4. i think if you talk to a dealer they can use the VIN# to track the key and get a key for you i don't know how much it costs i hope this helps you

  5. You can take out the rear seat and shine a flashlight in it to see if your keys are in there. If you can see the trunk latch, in the center of it is a circle with a square in it. If you can reach that square with a s***w driver and turn it the trunk will open. As far as new keys, a locksmith will have to do this. But it won't be too expensive since one key works all the locks.

  6. Call a Ford dealer and have your VIN (it will be on the dash on the drivers side you can see it from the outside)  They will be able to get you a set of keys at a fairly reasonable price.

  7. Picking the lock, if it is possible, could permanently damage the lock...so I wouldn't recommend it. Try contacting an auto mechanic nearby.

  8. Does anyone you know have a Mercury or Ford?  If their key will fit into the hole try their door key, very gently in your door lock or trunk lock, who knows it may work.

  9. can you get into the car at all ? have you tried a coat hanger around the lock button or switch if you can get in  you may be able to unlock the trunk from inside the car or through the back seat ... other than that call around for prices for a lock smith and have extra keys made and put a door key aside for emergencies ( ie 1 in your wallet or hide a key box)
