I'm not great, but here are the basics are far as reading what the defense is showing. Note - "showing" is the key word. Most clever plays show one tendency, and surprise you with another.

1) How many men are "in the box"? There will always be the linemen. If the linebackers are already between their linemen, you probably don't want to run there. Or they may come through to get your QB. Simple enough, right?

2) What are the safeties doing? If they brought one up, you might want to set a man in motion to move him. Or send a WR to that spot with a hot route, and hit him with a pass.

3) Are there alot of guys playing back, away from the line? They may be expecting a pass

There are no surefire rules for how to read a blitz, or how to tell when LBs or safeties will cover, and when they'll attack. Just use their location in relation to the line, to tell how aggressive they will be. IF they put alot of guys in the box, throw where they aren't to spread them out. If they are spread out in coverage, run it down their throat so they have to keep guys in the box

Like my tennis coach used to say - "Just hit it where they ain't." So those are the basics.

well just start by looking at the defensive carefully. if there is three down linemen, and four linebackers, they're most likely bringing a blitz, but there is also sufficient secondary coverage. if its four down linemen, and three linebackers, they're trying to stop runs going up the middle, also if you turn on JM and AM (madden and michaels) commentary, then they'll sometimes tell you what defense it is. if you have an incorrect offense to combat the defense, simply call an audible. nickel, dime, and quarter are all zone plays, so try running against these

easiest way to know wat type of defense they are in.

put a man in motion.

if the guy follows your guy all the way its MOST LIKELY man to man

if they dont its most likely zone.

It has nothing to do with linemen like the idiot said. That is the defense they run. This is what you do. Look at the SS. If he is back buy the FS(Same depth or close) then that is cover 4. If he inverted to look like a 4th or 5th LB then it is cover 3 the FS will have deep middle the CB<s deep outside. run a TE seam in cover 3 and attack the flats in cover 4. Now the first guy was right a little. send a guy in motion. But if you don't want to do that then see if the OLB split the difference between your #2 and the rest of the line or is inside shade or head up. If yes then man to man.

Like the previous person mention, you can put a receiver in motion and if the defender is following your receiver.  Another way is too look at the person who they are trying to control.  Many people are always trying to control their linebackers a lot.  Watch them a lot.  Good Luck on-line.
