I had not checked my post office box for about 6 weeks . I found a letter saying i have possible error and to contact within 7 days or they will process my return based on information on thier system. i used etax. Does this mean they will process it with my mistake or go on a previous years return. i am worried i am in trouble for not calling in the first place but i didnt know there was a problem. The seven days was up on Friday 22nd August. How long will the processing take now? Thx for any help.

  1. "They will process your return based on information that they have in their system" => they will process your tax return based on what they believe should be correct.

The ATO data matches with many financial institutions, government bodies etc - maybe there is some small interest or dividend income that you overlooked but they found. Don't stress too much about it. Give them a call if you want, for your peace of mind. But if it's after the due date (22 August) your return might have been commenced being processed anyway with whatever that they think should have been included or excluded.

  2. The application will be processed with the mistake included. They will not resort to another years return, that would be illegal on their part. You should ring them immediately and get it sorted or you could be in trouble with the ATO for making a false claim.
