  1. Well it's not the colouring because that's tasteless.

How have you actually made it? It should be just icing sugar and water. If there's a dodgy taste it might be something in the icing sugar.

  2. You could add flavouring in such as vanilla or peppermint. Even add lemon or orange, there are lots of possibilities. Also are you sure that you made it correctly because this could be another reason why it does not taste nice.

I always make icing with this recipe [glace icing]:

    100g of sieved icing sugar

    1 tablespoon of warm water

a few drops of flavouring/colouring if desired

Gradually add the water to the icing sugar drop by drop and stir until smooth. Then add the flavouring and colouring. You must use it immediately - don't leave it.

Hope i have helped and have fun eating your cake :)

  3. I bake all the time, and use icing all the time. Once, not so long ago, the icing tasted horrible, and i realsied that it was becuase i had some garam masala in a bag in the cupboard lying open and the cupboard had a real strong smell in it from the masala. So figured the smell from it, had worked its way into the icing sugar!!

Probably not true, but thats what i think happened.

  4. Seive in some icing sugar

  5. It really depends on how you made the icing. If its not sweet enough, add more sugar. If it just tastes awful, you might want to start over.

  6. PINK MOUNTAIN FROSTING

    1/2 cup sugar

    1/4 cup light corn syrup

    2 tablespoons water

    2 egg whites

    1 teaspoon vanilla

    Red food coloring

Mix sugar, corn syrup and water in saucepan. Cover; heat to rolling boil over medium heat. uncover; boil rapidly until candy thermometer registers 242 degrees or until small amount of mixture dropped into very cold water forms a firm ball that holds its shape until pressed.

As mixture boils, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Pour hot syrup very slowly in thin stream into egg whites, beating constantly on medium speed. Add vanilla and 8 drops red food coloring; beat on high speed until stiff peaks form. FILLS AND FROSTS TWO 8- OR 9-INCH LAYERS OR FROSTS A 13X9-INCH CAKE.

  7. Add some extract, Vanilla, Almond, Peppermint---depending on the flavor of the cake.  What did you use to make it pink that didn't taste good?  Your best bet may be to start over.  Are you sure your butter or shortening wasn't "off" as in taste???  Everyone has a big can of Crisco in their pantry but if you haven't used it for a while they do tend to go "off".  And butter can take on other taste from the fridge, you have to use fresh.

  8. What is your recipe?  Add vanilla or some flavoring.
