I have movies dowloaded from the net as .avi and its subtitles as .srt. ?

Question

Now how do i merge these two files so that i can play them using my portable media player on my tv. When i watch the movie on my laptop i can see the subs but when i play it on the tv using my media player i cannot see the subs.. Please anyone out there. Oh yeah I use a MAC Laptop.
