I work at a K-12 school. I was asked to take some of the high school students onto my caseload this upcoming year. My bachelor's degree, however is in Elementary Education with a minor in Social Studies. So legally all I would be allowed to teach is those grades. However, this past year I worked on a waiver in order to get licensed to teach Sped. So I finished my college classes and will now have alt. licensure, but am unsure if that alt licensure allows me to teach K-12 Sped, or just K-8. Please provide any assistance you can, and legal references if possible. Thank you in advance for your time and help.

  1. It may be different in your state, but in California your multiple subject credential would entitle you to teach in any self-contained classroom K-12, meaning you have to be teaching all subjects to your pupils.  All elementary teachers in CA have this type of credential, so it sounds like the type of bachelor's and teaching license you have. The only difference would be that California requires the credential be obtained after receiving a bachelor's degree.  If you obtained your special ed. credential after the fact, you'd be entitled to teach any grade level regular or special ed. student as long as the classroom were self-contained.  So I think you would be considered fully credentialed to teach special education high school students in California in a self-contained classroom with your credentials.

  3. in my state a spec ed certificate includes prek through age 21

but, you do need to be highly qualified--if you are teraching a specific subject in hs--you need to be HQ in that subject also--

if you are a generalist (teaching all subjects)-you are probably HQ for all levels
