My name is Keelie, i'm 17 and i am hoping to go to flying school in September to learn to fly... In the future i would love to be a commercial pilot so have decided now is the time to take my class one medical! Has anyone done this medical at Gatwick and can give me any personal tips on what to expect?! Especially any female pilots out there, ive heard a little bit about when men should expect but am clueless of what i will be tested for or expected to do! Please, any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks...

  1. Females have pretty much the same requirements as males (with obvious exceptions for anatomical differences.)  If you have normal heart and breathing, and an IQ above room temperature, you should do fine.

  2. Hi Keelie, you will also need to pass your JAR class 2 medical for your PPL, which is required before you can pass through your ratings onto a CPL or ATPL.

A class 1 medical is a more stringent medical examination, so it makes sense that you have chosen to pass this first.

I have heard horror stories of Private Pilots who have been unable to fly through there ratings onto commercial becuase of a failed class 1 medical.

I'm not sure what specific route you have chosen but it seems through your post that you have decided to self finance yourself, either as a PPL and slowly building up through your ratings. Or you have decided to obtain your PPL first, take your A-levels and then apply for sponsorship when your older.

Whatever route you decide to go ahead for, don't do so without advice from instructors who have knowledge of commercial or ATPL routes.

Below is the CAA website which specifies some requirements and examinations undertaken for both JAR medicals.

Stay focused and good luck for your future.
