  2. Even with an IP address and subnet mask you need to have the Gateway address of your router. Your computer knows the network its on but, can not determine how to send traffic off of it's own network. That is the job of the router. Your computer sends data on the Layer 2. Routers direct traffic between other routers using Layer 3.

    The Gateway is usually the interface address of the closest router port. If it's Linksys or Motorola default is 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 . This can be changed depending on the model and settings.
