Question:

I have myopia should I wear my glasses full time?

Okay so I have myopia (I see things close up and blurry when far away). Should I wear my glasses full time? Is this suggested? Will it hurt my eyes or worsen my condition/make it harder for me to see close up?

If I wear them part time, how do I go about that? Do I just wear them while driving at night and while watching TV?

I should mention I have a pretty weak prescription (relatively speaking).

Thanks for your input!

  1. Wearing your glasses full time will not improve your vision. You will just get used to them and will have hard time going without them.

There is no real proof whether the glasses will worsen the vision, but this is very likely to happen. Almost every person that suffers from myopia will have to increase prescription over time and there are some indications that constant wearing of glasses and/or contacts will hasten this worsening.

There are eye exercises you can perform that can help with myopia. If interested, check out the source below.

  2. I started to wear glasses (for a moderate degree of myopia) when I was in my late twenties but it was about 10 years before I started to wear them all the time (partly because I felt self-conscious in them and had made a bad choice of frames for my first pair).  The only time when I thought that it was really important to wear them was for driving and I also wore them in places like the theatre or cinema where being able to see clearly would enhance my enjoyment.    I made the decision to wear them all the time when I changed my job - my current work colleagues have never known me without glasses and I like the convenience of not having to take them on and off.  But (apart from driving), I think it's a question of personal preference - my understanding is that it won't damage your eyes if you don't wear them all the time (but I'm by no means an expert on this)
