I have never been to an ocean so forgive my ignorance, how long does it take for the "tide to come in"...

then how long does the water stay high? does it come in everyday or like seasonally? how can you dock boats if the water drops so much and then comes back up? would you have to get a ladder to get down to it when it its low tide? please explain this it seems very problematic to me especially if you lived somewhere like venice.

  1. Wow, this is a huge question you are asking. In general, most areas have two high tides and two low tides each day. When the two highs and the two lows are about the same height, the pattern is called a semi-daily or semidiurnal tide. If the high and low tides differ in height, the pattern is called a mixed semidiurnal tide. Some areas, such as the Gulf of Mexico, have only one high and one low tide each day. This is called a diurnal tide. The U.S. West Coast tends to have mixed semidiurnal tides, whereas a semidiurnal pattern is more typical of the East Coast.

Tidal heights can also be vastly different, for example in the Caribbean the tide is only a few inches while on the Pacific side of the Panama Canal it can be around 20 feet.

For docking boats there are either floating jettys that you can tie the boat to or else there is a special technique using long ropes to allow the boat to fall and rise with the tide.

Yes, you often need a ladder to get down when the tide is very low. Some places that have large tides have specialy designed boats that rest on the bottom at low tide. Also the channals are often dredged to allow boats to come and go when the tide is low. I think that you will find that in  places like Venice and Amsterdam it is not such a problem as the canals are closed of from the sea and therefore not so effected by the tide.

  2. google "the rule of twelfths" for how tides come in and go back out......

  3. I think around 8 hours to come in stays for3 and then recedes and is low for 3I know missing a few hours but the tidal event is never the same each day and changes due to the earth and moon orbits. For real cool pictures on high and low tides look up the Bay of Fundy they have the worlds highest tides  look for Halls Harbour in Nova Scotia and The Rocks provincial park in New Brunswick should have some good pics if not live action video of the tides

  4. it seems like every 10 seconds but in reality its 24 hours but it is continual so the tides keeps coming in.

  5. Tides are classified as Diurnal (once a day) Semidiurnal (twice a day or Mixed (once OR twice a day).

On a planet without land, the tide would rise and fall every 12 hours or so (the moon rotates around the planet every 24hrs and 45 minutes or so.), The geography of the continents changes that tidal time- the ocean needs to flow around and through structures, so the tide varies infinitely in both height and duration. It rises and falls predictably in all areas, so there's always tidal predictions for all areas.
