  1. You have to get the xs on the same side and the numbers without the xs on the same side of the equation.

    15/x-4=6/x+3

           +4      +4 Addition property of equality

    15/x=6/x+7

    -6/x    -6/x     Subtraction property of equality (You can              subtract these fractions because they have the same denomonators.)

    9/x=7

    /7   /7            Division property of equality

    x=about 1.286, rounded to the nearest thousanth. If you need it rounded differently, divide 9 by 7 and there's your answer.

  2. Are you solving for x? If so:

    Get the x's on one side

    15/x - 6/x = 3+4

    Subtract like any other fraction with a common denominator

    9/x = 7

    Multiply both sides by x

    9 = 7x

    Divide both sides by 7

    9/7 = x

  3. It may help to think of 15/x and 6/x as fractions, not as 15 divided by x or 6 divided by x(though it means the same thing).  Subtract 3 from both sides, you now have 15/x-4-3=6/x+3-3, which simplifies to 15/x-7=6/x.  Now subtract 6/x from both sides, 15/x -6/x-7=6/x-6/x which simplifies to 9/x-7=0.  That may be as far as you need to go.  If you need to solve for x, add 7 to both sides (9/x=7), multiply both sides by x (9=7x), divide both sides by 7(9/7=x), which works out to be 1.2857 or so.  checking your work, 15/1.2857-4=7.667, and 6/1.2857+3=7.667.  There may be a more elegant way (I would hope!)!!
