  1. Standard cable usually means a fifty or more channel fully analog system with pretty lousy picture even by standard def sensibilities, but you can still scale it to 720P or 1080P of bleeding and blurriness. You may, however, have a few HD channels and not even know it. Some cable companies place digital ATSC signals in the basic package for people without cable boxes; you may find a few new stations or high-def versions of local affiliates when you hook up your HDTV.

  2. Analog standard cable will NEVER be in HD NEVER. That is the reason for digital.

Basic analog cable more than likely will have the local stations in digital HD as part of the service.  Digital cable comes in on the same line the analog TV comes on. Most broadcast stations want their signal carried on the cable TV system so they allow them to be carried for free. It costs the cable system money to buy the equipment to scramble these channels so it is easy to just pass them along in the clear.

On your HDTV set go into channel setup and do an auto channel search for all channels digital as well as analog.  Chances are it will find the digital HD local channels. They will be on channels above the last analog channel.

It is up to the local station to put the football games on in HD or not. Not all digital programming is in HD.  But NO analog programming is in HD.

IF you mean ESPN's Monday Night Football or Fox Sports Net, or some other cable sports channel sorry NO!  Those channel cost the cable system lots of money so it is scrambled, analog and digital. You must pay to get it. You paid for the analog feed so you will get it. BUT not the digital feed. You need the cable company's HD  digital box to get them and that will cost more money.

  3. No you will not get any HD channels received as HD. You need to subscribe to HD in order to receive the HD picture.

  4. No you will not get HD, you can attach an Over the air antenna to cpature the broadcst HD signal from your local affiliates or subscribe to HD through your cable provider.  BTW upgrading to cable is pretty cheap, normally like 10.00/month and just exchanging out your current box for an HD one.
