I got a betta fish from a family friend for absolutely no reason, it was given 2 me in a 1-gal glass bowl. My dorm roomates won't let me get a tank, but the only only bigger bowl i found at petsmart was a 2.5 plastic (very flimsy and unappealing, and i heard plastic gets dirty faster) bowl, I don't know if i should get that or just leave him in his current bowl. He seems 2 like his new home (i got him 3 days ago). he's making a bubble nest, so he's happy rite? should i get the plasitc bowl, or just leave him in the 1-gal?

  1. Your betta needs a filtered ,heated tank to be healthy. You should be able to get a small 2.5 gallon tank at the petstore that has a filter built in and a small heater to fit it...the betta will be happier and healthier in there even if it is small to. an ideal tank is 5 gallons or more. The temperature should be 78-80 as they are tropical fish . Make sure you test the water to make sure the ammonia and nitrites don't get to high untill the tank is cycled as those can kill the kish. Do water changes every day or 2 until it it cycled. 25% every day or 2 should do it. Don't forget to use declorinator and make sure the water going into the tank is the same temp as the water in the tank. Good luck.

  2. Leave him there, betas are easily impressed.

  3. i dont know for sure, but i heard that beta fish don't mind small places. i, for one, don't believe it, though. you should just get a tank and tell your roomates its your dorm, too! lol or you can just try out that 2.5 plastic bowl from petsmart and see how it works out.

btw, i never heard that plastic bowls get faster quicker.

  4. They do like small environments. Just keep the water clean by changing it by half every week. He should be fine.

  5. I think betas like small tanks...I'm no expert, but I did have one once and kept him in a small place...after a few months I bought him a much bigger tank (not huge, just a bigger bowl) and he died the night I put him in it...coulda been for a number of reasons, I'm sure, but still...maybe he was just freaked out by the amount of space he all of a sudden had

  6. I would leave him in the one gallon tank.

A slimy film often forms on the side of plastic, as if it isn't unappealing to see through as it is, right?

Bettas are an ideal fish to keep because they don't mind smaller spaces.  Although that doesn't mean you should put him in a water glass, he can survive.  Make sure you clean him at least once every week, rinsing the bowl and filling it with fresh water.  Don't worry about breaking his nest.  He'll build it again.  :)  Buy some medication to clear the water of harmful chemicals like chlorine at your local pet store.  You must use this every time you clean the bowl.  Otherwise, the chemicals could kill him.  I recommend APPro Genesis.  It lasts forever, well worth your money.  Bettas need air, so leave plenty of surface area for him to reach.

It sounds like he's pretty happy.  I wouldn't worry about it.  If you're extremely concerned, try finding another friend to take him who can offer more.

  7. Well if hes bubbleing than hes fine. My beta lives in a clear vase and he loves it. =]

  8. get him some gravel and plant.

he will be happy even more
