I am a senior in highschool and im trying to decide what to go to college for. I have no idea how someone could help me decide this but i thought i would give it a shot. Some things i enjoy doing are being with kids, animals, native american history and spirituality, ancient history and mythology. I can be shy and it can take me a little bit to take charge in situations. I am good with people but there are many times when my mood changes at the drop of a hat, A little information to tell a little bit about my self. Thanks...

  1. Ok I had the same problem. First of all when you get to college take all your basics first, the ones you would need for any major. Then you can either take electives that sound interesting from different majors (you are going to need electives any way). The college you go to will also have counslors that can help you with that. They have personality tests and career tests. They are there to help you with these sort of problems. You can also pick undecided at many colleges when you first get there. This is all what I did, and I found the major right for me and then figured out what I want to do in life from that.

  2. If you can you might just consider doing similar to what I did. Pick a school you feel has subjects you might be interested in (or a local collage you could transfer credits from later) and just do your core classes the first year. I was able to do that and then declare a major my second year. By then I had a better idea of what I was interested in.

I would not suggest taking a year off. Too many people find it too easy to just never get around to college when they do that.

  3. The worst thing to do is to take a year off.  It's a waste.  A lot of people that do that end up working for min. wage or blowing time in front of mom's tv.  There are so many more interesting things you can be doing.  PLUS, taking a year off, you start to forget some things and it makes it harder to go back and get started again.

Go to college.  Take whatever classes you are interested in.  Do that until you find out what you want to do in the future.  It will come to you.

I suggest you take some Native American Studies classes.  Maybe take a forestry class.  Maybe take a Native language class.

If you are shy, go to a community college.  They usually have small classes.  And until you decide exactly what you want to do, Community College is the cheapest.  Be sure to check into programs that pay for it for you.  Stay away from student loans, at least at first.  There are so many scholarships and financial aid that you probably won't need loans.

Just to get started, go check out as many community colleges and the classes they offer as you can.  You can search them online so you don't even have to leave the house if you don't want to.

Your first semester of classes could look like this:

Intro to Native Studies 3 credits

    Intro to forestry 3 credits

Native language(which one depends on where you are) 4 credits

    Philosophy 3 credits

    13 credits

If you can find 4 classes you are interested in, college is REALLY easy!  It's not like HS where you have to take what they say you have to take.

I suggest that you take a keyboarding class though if you can't type.  I feel that keyboarding should be mandatory for every freshman that can't type.  It makes everything else so much easier.  PLUS, you can make money later on typing other peoples papers that can't type LOL.

The most important thing is to NOT get freaked out about it.  High School teachers and advisors think that it is their job to make high schoolers worry about it so they go do something.

    1. It's NOT hard to get into college. I got in with a 1.9 GPA (I'm a college professor now).

    2. You can take any classes you want to.  Don't let anyone tell you different.  Have fun with it.

    3.  Paying for it is a lot easier than some will have you think.

So no worries.  You get to go to college!  You don't have to work for some idiot YET.  Be happy!

    :)

  4. To be honest, I'd take a year off from school before decided when (or if) to go to college and why.

The reason this is a good idea is because it will give you the opportunity to go out and WORK instead of being in a book all the time... you may come to find that you don't want to go to college at all (or atleast not for a while).

The way I look at it, get any good job you can while they still exist... college loans and grants will always be there, decent jobs that help you build a resume are quickly evaporating with our current decline in economic stability.

    Just my three cents :)
