I have no clue where to start!?

I've always felt we were very savvy reusers! However, we are TERRIBLE recyclers! I live in a rural area. The only service we get here is trash pickup! No recycling! I've contacted a couple of places about starting a program but I haven't had much response. I've taken to transporting my stuff into the big city when I go to work. I'd like to see a recycling program in my little hick county. Any suggestions?

  1. Keep taking in your recycling. Small hick counties are just that because they keep things simple, let them figure out how to incorporate the service OR you can contact your neighbors and let it be a grass roots initiative. The trash pick up service doesn't pick up recycliing because there's probably not enough demand to make it worth it, especially with the price of gas.

  2. If your city is so small, they might not have the resources to handle any kind of recycling program.  I'd keep sorting out your recyclables at home and then when you go to the city recycle them there.  If you can, try not to go out of your way to do it though as the extra gas you're using will just offset any good you get from recycling.  But if the recycling center is on your way to work, well then that's all gravy!

  3. i really don't care about the environment. as long as I'm breathing that is more than enough for me!!!! i let god worry about the things in the future.

  4. I think a small town blue is sometimes difficult to deal with. Your best bet is try to make a video presentation to your town hall mayor to show him or her about the importance recycling in your local community is needed indeed. Try to quote a example (if any) or two of your neighbouring small towns are currently doing recycling. That's how the local politicians respond indifferently to the small voice. Keep on trying, you will get it in the near future.

  5. I would start by educating the kids. Perhaps contact the local elementary school to go in and do a presentation to the children to get them fired up about recycling and what it means to their future. Maybe the high school has a recycling club or will be willing to start one. Give them handouts to take with them and let them recruit their parents to get the whole area on the bandwagon! There is power in numbers and once you have others involved, then you can go to your county or whatever and demand a recycling center be started somewhere more convenient. Even if it is limited - glass, paper, cans, plastic. I know this will be a long process, but someone has to do it - so why not you! And just think what a bigger impact you will be making than just recycling your stuff!! GOOD LUCK!!!!

  6. Well, comes to my mind if theres a possibility for you to make a little side business out of it.

I mean, buy a car, i think they are in english called pick up trucks, and start asking from your neighbhours if theyd be interested in paying you some certain sum that you come and pick their stuff once a week.

So then you use one-two nights a week for driving that pick up around your neighbourhood and thorwing that recycle stuff on that pickup. And then at morning when you go to work, all the garbage are already there on that pick up truck, and then you just toss the garbage to same place you toss your own garbage too to be recycled. And you get some nice extra while making some good for enviromental.

  7. Sending a letter to the local council, start a compost bin, collect neighbors recyclables for a few cents. Where I live, they actually pay you a cent or two for every can you recycle, so thats a good motive
