I have no guitar playing history, i literally got mine an hour ago what do I need to learn to start playing?

I still need to buy a strap and I think an electric tuner. btw how much do those cost? How often do strings break? What else do I need to know?

First off, start with finding a GOOD teacher. Lessons are worth it. Music stores will most likely offer lessons, just gotta ask.

Right at the beginning it will tell you that private lessons are a MUST. And there are reasons. When you get a good teacher, he or she will be able to answer all of the questions you have.

Tuner 15 or less, strings should last 2 or 3 weeks, learn the basic "cowboy" chords and right hand strumming. Good luck

Local music stores should have the tuners pretty cheap. I would say less than $100 bucks. If strings are put on properly, they shouldn't really break...unless you're really rockin out. :)

I think all you need is time. Get a few books, or videos to help you get the fret positions & notes. :) Good luck!

The first thing you need to know is the phone number of the BEST guitar teacher in town.  A GOOD teacher is worth their weight in gold, and a POOR teacher is a waste of every penny.  Get someone with a degree in music - you are going to find a LOT of wannbes and posers, and guys who cannot get a gig, who are *teaching* (if you can call it that) because they are bitter and broke.  Find the BEST teacher - you really should have done that before you shelled out for the guitar, because they also could have saved you some serious$$ on THAT, too.

tuners are about 20 dollars. and you dont really need a strap, but thats up to you, cause i think its easier to play sitting down than standing up. strings dont really break unless you do some serious shredding and strumming, but you should buy an extra pack of strings just in case (you can find them for as low as $5 at guitar center). you can google search "guitar chords" , "simple guitar scales" , "simple guitar songs" stuff like that. and to start out with lessons, i would go to a rec center close by. and then if you like it you can go take private lessons at someones house.

I have had my guitar for 7 years and the strings have never broken as of yet.  The price of a strap and tuner depend on where you shop and the different styles.  If your guitar doesn't have an end pin, it costs to have one mounted.  You should really go to a music store and buy guitar sheet music for beginners and start from there.  That way you take little steps first rather than just jumping into the harder stuff, otherwise you will get frustrated and give up before you ever begin.
