My boyfriend is buying tools for his new house and he wants a drill. I went on the website to look for one to surprise him with but I have no idea how they work! I think he just wants a basic one? Can anyone reccommend one that isn't overly pricey and I guess basic. Thanks!

  1. There is A LOT of good advice here on Brands.  In my mind the two most important features are the battery and torque.

Battery:  Get one with a Lithium Ion battery.  VERY important, NOT to get Nickel Cadmium (Ni Cad).  Spend the little extra money.

Torque:  For basic work, torgue may not be important, but for heavier jobs, a small torque drill will burn out quickly.

  2. I have a Black & Decker 3/4 inch variable speed reversible drill.  It is not too expensive and I use it all the time.  With proper care mine has lasted many, many years.

  3. I'd try Black& Deker, or Craftsman.  Both are pretty good quality, and a reasonablr price.  there are also different voltages.  a 12 volt will due for most household projects.  If he is really into DIY stuff go with an 18 volt.

  4. I would go for a mains powered drill! with a battery one, you always discover the batteries are flat when you need the drill! I picked up the cheapest mains powered drill i could find and it works just fine! I think its a 1400watt drill and cost about £20. If you have extra money, buy a selection of wood drill bits, brick drill bits and possibly metal drill bits!

  5. Black and Decker is probably the cheapest nice drill.  Both with and without a power cord.  I actually bought a cordless for 40 dollars a few years ago and it was nice.

I now have a DeWalt and it was about 125 and came with two battery packs.  It's a little better I think.

I also have a Milwaukee drill and it's the top of the line and not cheap but very high quality.

OH, you only need a 3/8 drill.  You don't need a 1/2 inch drill.

If he's in to building, there are beginers, and work men. If you are planning to give it as a gift, i recomend you should look at some places, like home depot, or some lincks, depending were you live. If you find one in a diffrent state, you can have them ship it down for you. But here are some links to get to some power saws. To work one, follow by the name. POWER drill.

  7. Don't buy a generic drill  because the batteries won't last very long & they have  low run time. makita or milwakee are very good drills, not the cheapest, . but you only have to buy it one time. 12 volt  with 2 batts, 1 hour charger . Good home use drill. 18 volt for big projects.

  8. Definetely go cordless.

I like Dewalt.  Go for 14.4 Volt.  18  Volt is overkill for a home DIY drill.

There are lots of good brands out there.  You might ask if he has a preferred brand.

You can also get matching tools, seperately or in sets, such as saws, lights, battery charger radios, etc.,  for some brands.
