I have a 1996 Pontiac Grand Am. Just recently I was told some belt needed to be fixed on it. It was supposed to be fixed tomorrow. I took it out today and just had a new battery put in it. While I was driving the highway tonight I noticed my car lights were blinking and nothing that needed electricity was working at all. Someone helped me jump it and I got it home but now I can't even get it on. I think it might be the alternator but I'm not sure.

And if it is, how much would a new alternator cost for my car? Including labor.

  1. to have a shop replace it would cost about 200-250 dollars the alternator is 120 but gets marked up because they have to go get ti and labor will be about 58-80 dollars per hour. total time on the vehicle should be between 0.7 and 1.0 hours

  2. Step one, don't replace the battery without checking the rest of the system first.  Step two, fix the belt.  Step 3, clean out the back seat so that you can get it on.

  3. could be the belt or alternator. should cost nothing for a shop to take a look at it. a delco alternator with mark up, labor, and a new belt will run around 400 dollars parts and labor

  4. Start the engine , with it running disconnect the battery. If the engine stops running it it the alternator. But frist check that belt they told you about.

  5. yea, that would be the alternator belt you need.
