well you cant get true surround sound without a digital cable because it is a digital signal. You will have to buy one of those cables if you want to get surround sound. buy the cheapest ones because as long as it transfers your signal there is no way to make it better so it is fine to buy a $5 cable. it makes no difference.

If your receiver is so old it only supports Pro-logic you need to upgrade! Pro-logic was the very first step made into surround sound. What it does is matrix one mono surround channel using an out of phase signal over the existing 2 stereo channels. To make your X-box do this you have to go into the audio menu and tell it to use pro-logic. Then you just hook the right and left audio to your receiver and it should autodetect the pro-logic signal.

If your receiver does have either a coaxial or fiber optic input you will be far better off using it. If it is fiber optic you're all set. If it is coaxial you can get a converter at Radio Shack for about $20.
