Question:

I have no teaching education or experience, but I've volunteered to teach computer skills to the blind?

I've volunteered at an organization to teach computer skills to blind adults. First I have to familiarize myself with a new voice software program(not out yet) they will be using. I have a degree from a university and am now pursuing a certificate in Computer Information Systems, but never even thought about teaching, let alone teaching the blind. I don't even know anyone who's blind.

I know they plan to give me some training with blind people, but I want to have some information and tips before I start.

Suggestions, Info, Tips, Websites? all welcome and appreciated.

  1. The first tip is to not refer to them as "blind people".  They are people first and whatever disability they have is secondary to that!

Second tip, why don't you try getting through 1 full day without using your sight so you can have some insight into the roadblocks they face every day.  Until you walk that mile in someone else's shoes, you really don't have an appreciation for their struggles and difficulties.

http://www.questia.com/library/education...  can give you some information about teaching visually impaired students.

I applaud your decision to help these students learn computer skills!!  You are a shining star in the dark night and they will bless you more then you bless them!!  Have fun!!!
