I am an hour from stores and only have brown sugar, raw sugar (I'd rather not waste in brownies), and confectioners' powder. I have cocoa and all the other ingredients so wanted to make a quick batch of scratch brownies. One of the few things I never made is simple homemade brownies. I found recipes but of course all with traditonal white sugar. What would have little difference?

  1. brown sugar will work fine =)

  2. id say iceing sugar but u need alota since its powder so add to taste

  3. brown sugar is simple white sugar with molasses add...and it will be fine to sub it for white sugar.

  4. Brown sugar is what makes your biscuits soft and chewy.

  5. Brown sugar will work fine.  I use raw sugar for mine.  Don't use the powdered, because it will cause your brownies to turn out overly sweet.

  6. No powdered sugar. You will ruin them. Go for the Brown sugar. All it is, is sugar and molasses. If you rinse brown sugar, it will be white again. But you will have to let the water evaporate before you can use it.

  7. Do not use the powdered sugar. Confectioner's sugar ("powdered"), contains cornstarch. This will make your brownies a little tough in texture. As well as giving a doughy texture.

Using the brown sugar... The brown sugar will actually give your brownies a slight caramel flavour, which is not a bad thing at all!

The raw sugar is a bit pricey, but will give the brownies the traditional taste and texture of the original recipe, and will be easiest to measure out.

  8. Use brown sugar instead.  Just pack it down level in teh measuring cup to measure.  Use equal parts as white sugar.

  9. You could use brown sugar, but the taste of molasses might come up.  If you use brown sugar, reduce your liquid by one tablespoon per cup of sugar.

    Don't use powdered sugar

    Good luck
