Question:

I have not been eating any red nor white meat for the past 3 months now. Still consuming seafood and diary

though. However, I don't know what is going on with me. But I find myself feeling extremely tired, fatigued and weak. I went to the gym and wasn't able to keep up with my usual workout. I climb 25 stairs at home and I am huffing and puffing my lungs out. I thought quiting meat gives more energy but what is happening to me? I feel like I can sleep all day long.

Any advice?

  1. Have your iron checked- low iron can cause severe fatigue. Tell your doc what is going on, you may need to take some supplements. Make sure your diet is balanced.

You haven't quit eating meat 1st off...seafood is meat.  2nd you are not getting enough protein.  When I first became a vegetarian(NO MEAT AT ALL EVER) I felt weak like that...you must put protein in your diet like beans, soy meats, etc...once your body gets used to not having the protein from a dead animal source then you will start feeling better.  Again you must have protein...and if you quit meat all together and don't get enough protein, your hair will fall out...no joke...mine didn't, but I know many ppl who's did.

  4. Hmm. I don't know. It's probably something else in your diet or it has nothing to do with your diet. Did you take a break from working out for awhile? Your cardiovascular fitness level should not go down unless you're not working out. (Huffing and puffing? That's not fatigue, that's a lack of fitness.)

    Maybe you've been replacing what used to be lean meat with high-fat dairy. That would definitely make you more sluggish.

    My advice is to be sure you have carbs and protein at every meal and make sure you are choosing foods that are low in saturated fat. Have plenty of fruits and drink lots of water.  

  5. I would see your doctor.  This is more of a medical question.  Also, vegetarians do not eat seafood.  If you are eating a balanced diet, quitting meat has nothing to do with how you feel.

If you are still eating seafood and consuming dairy products which both contain proper amounts of iron and vitamin b12, than is is not your diet, uinless you are simply not eating enough.  There are A LOT of calories in red meat, you have cut your calorie intake by cutting red meat, so you can expect not to have to do your usual routine at the gym.  Your body is taking in less calories and you are trying to burn more than your ar etaking in.  Since becomming a lacto ovo pescatarian you should lower your work out or make up fo rthe lost calories by eating more. fyi...fish is white meat.

  8. You probably are not eating a healthy balanced diet. I know vegetarians who look like cows, simply because they consume tons of dairy products. Feeling they way you do has absolutely nothing to to with being a vegetarian vs a flesh eater. I used to be a flesh eater, and since cutting meat and dairy, I have never felt healthier, more energetic etc than I have now.

    Read some good books on the matter and follow their suggestions.

  9. Oh, you're a pescetarian. Make sure you have vitamins and protien in your diet. And, sorry, but it sounds like you just need more excercise. :)

  10. You could be low on vitamin b12 but shellfish contains high amounts of b12 so it could be something else.

  11. There is a possibility that you have iron deficiency anemia. Your body needs the element iron to make hemoglobin, a substance in red blood cells that enables them to carry oxygen.

    The category of people who are most likely to get iron deficiency anemia are young, female, vegetarians, which I am and I assume you are. Females especially need iron because of many reasons, one being that we lose alot of iron during periods, another being that we do not store as much iron as men. Vegetarians are susceptible because Red meat really is one of the best sources of iron, specifically a type of iron called heme iron that is the most easily absorbed by the human body, and non heme iron (the kind in vegetables) while easily available in many vegetables is not as efficiently absorbed as heme iron. (I am not dogging the veg diet though don't worry I am a pesco just like you!) REMEMBER Just because you still eat dairy, eggs and fish does not mean you have enough iron! 1 in 5 meat eating women get this, much less people who abstain from red meat. I am a pesco who had anemia two years ago.

    Now what can you do? Well it is good that you still eat eggs and dairy because that has some iron. Among the best non-animal foods are iron-fortified cereals, breads and pastas. Beans and peas, dark green leafy vegetables also contain some iron. You can easily buy iron supplements at a phermacy without a prescription, either by itself or as a multivitamin. Look for vitamins made specificaly for women, they will usually have lots of iron. When you take the supplements, or eat iron-rich foods, combine them with some orange juice or lemon juice, as the Vitamin C in citrus fruits helps to absorb the iron.

    If increasing your iron intake does not help you should go see a docter, as it might indicate internal bleeding or a non-iron related condition

Fatigue and shortness of breath are often signs of iron deficiency.  Add iron rich foods like dark leafy greens (kale, romaine, broccoli) to your diet along with legumes and whole grains.  If you have a cast iron pan, cook in it.  And pair your iron sources with vitamin C to increase absorption.  If none of that makes a difference, see your doctor and have your iron status checked.  Some people are prone to iron deficiency regardless of their diet (it's just as common amongst meat eaters as it is amongst vegetarians and vegans) so you may just have to take an iron supplement.
