Question:

I have noticed that my new hamster has caked on dry poo on his bum. Is this wet tail or perhaps constipation?

I bought him 3 days ago and he did not have the f***s on him. I am having trouble finding poo around his cage though, which is leading me to think this might be constipation instead of diarrhea. He is still very active, drinks water (though perhaps not nearly as much as I'd prefer) and he is relatively calm when i hold him and he accepts food from my hands. I tried to clean his backside with corn oil (I couldn't find the vegetable oil!) but to no avail :( I just switched him back to the food he was eating at the pet store (Living World Extrusion) in an attempt to regulate his digestive system. I do not know if I should be feeding him for constipation or for diarrhea though. yesterday i finally found some mushy looking greeny-brown poo on one of his tissues, but i don't know what that means. Help!!!

  1. Is he a long haired? My sisters hamster is long haired and gets some p**p stuck to its fur sometimes. I seriously dought that it's wet tail or diarrhea though. Is the p**p like normal pellets or is it smooshed?

And hamsters don't drink alot so don't worry about that!

  2. He needs to see a vet. I have had long hair and short hair hamsters, and I have never seen anything like this.

Don't worry about him having wet tail, his bottom would be wet all of the time.

Keep up what you are doing, but please take him to the vet. Good luck! ^-^

  3. Take him to see you vet as soon as you can. A dirty bottom can be a sign of serious illness in a hamster.
