I'm running on little money and I was offered a free 4ohm amp at 800 watts today and I'm wondering if it's safe for the amp and sub to run together because of the different resistances. I'm not looking for massive bass right now I just want something that gives a little extra to my stock sound system.

  1. well you have to look at the RMS wattage and not the peak wattage, if the amp is 800 watts RMS and your sub is 1000 watts peak each then the amp is will most likely blow the sub, how ever if your sub is 1000 Watts RMS and the amp is 800 RMS then it should run it but not to its full potential

to safely calculate the RMS wattage it is usually 40-50% of the peak wattage depending on the make.

up to 100 watts RMS difference between the sub and the amp is acceptable but any thing way over or way under will cause either your sub or your amp to blow

if you want more details walk into a car audio shop and pretend that you want to buy an amp form them for your sub and see what will they recommend then go back home and compare the spects to the amp you were offered

    hope this will help

    good luck
