  1. Yes, but...

If you have to string ethernet throughout your house then it may be better to use wireless.  Does your router have an antenna?  Is it a problem to get the cable connected?  If connecting with a cable is not a problem, DO IT.  By far the best solution.  If it is a problem, see if you have an antenna/wireless router.  If you do, you can probably just get a wireless card for your PC (PCI or USB for desktops, PCMCIA or USB for laptops).  If however you do not have the ability to easily connect your computer with ethernet AND your router does not have an antenna then it's probably cheapest to go buy both the wireless router and wireless card.  Talk to a [insert local computer shop here] employee about the best solution for your residence.

    Hope that helps!

  2. get a switch.

instead of puting the cable from the router to your computer put it in this http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?...

then you can hook up 5 computers to the internet.

  3. move wireless thing next to desktop and plug it in so the internet for the desktop goes through the wire and for the laptop it is wireless

  4. I would think about going wireless so you dont have wires everywhere.

Otherwise, you can connect a cable from your computer downstairs to the router as long as its less than 100m.
