I live in WI and I just started a new garden this year and wanted to give it a wild flower look. I chose to try some lavender. I bought 3 bushes of the same variety. They are planted on a slope type surface with a mix of good soil and some gravel types for drainage. One of them is growing beautifully, one is seems to be drying up with a few new growths coming out bright purple, and the third is fairly dried up looking. I've been watering here and there during the hot days with no rain but I can't understand why they aren't all growing fairly the same. The "dried" out areas don't look dead persay but the stems aren't as green as the good one and the purple tips turned more grayish. Are they in shock from being planted or are they in a slow process of dying?

  1. Hi:

I am a landscaper and designer. It sound like the two Lavender could be in shock. Take your fingernail or a small knife and scratch the surface of a stem. If it is green, it is still healthy. If it is brown, it is most likely in shock. With the new growth the bush is still alive. Add some organic mushroom compost to your soil. This is an organic fertilizer that will last up to one year. You could also purchase a good quality plant food and give the two bushes a jump start. Make sure your drainage on the slope is doing well around the two bushes suffering.

I will link you to the simple solutions section on my website. There is a page on slope planting with evergreens. This may give you some additional information that may help you. I will also link you to the site map, as this page has everything that is on the website. There are many articles, tips and techniques that could be useful to you and may help you out with your situation. Hope this helps some and good luck with your Lavender. Have a great day!
