I have only one rat, and I read they need to have at least two, but my mom doesn't like rats? Wut should I do?

I have only one pet rat. My mom was not happy about me even getting him. I have done a lot of research and everything I read said that I need to have two. My mom doesn't like rats, and I don't have the money for a new cage, and my old cage is not big enough for two. I need help on two things... any one know where I could find large inexpensive cages? And any ideas on how to help me convince my mom that two is not that much more work??? Thanks!

Try craigslist for large, inexpensive cages.

Tell your mother that when you have two, they are more occupied with each other leaving you and your family less to worry about. If she doesn't find that a good reason, thell her your a growing child and that you need more responsibilities in life.

About the cage... I think that a rat would fit decently in a regular wired cage and not one of those fancy designer made types. I believe that the standard type is best. About two stories will give them plenty to adventure around. It is best to get a cage that is rather wide with a plastic bottom so their tails don't catch in the wiring (this will only occur if you don't put enough bedding).

Until you can buy a new cage, just hold your rat as much as you possibly can.

Let him sit with you when you watch tv, do homework (?), read, etc.

Rats are very good company and he will appreciate all the love you can give him.

Well, the best thing for the rat is another rat.

The best thing for your mom is peace of mind.

If you love both, you will find a new home fo rhte rat, and wait to get your own place to get more later down the road.

That may not be what you want to hear, but it is an early lesson in love-

to be selfless.

You do not HAVE TO get 2 rats but it still is good to. To convince your mom to get another rat it would be best to not ask her for awile, it anoys the heck out of ALLL parents when you keep asking over and over again for somthing that they keep saying no to because the question wont even be given 1 thought, it will just be a "NO!!!" Also try and involve her more in your rat, like have her give it food so her sent is on the food so the rat will get used to her and she might even get more used to it. But in the mean time so your rat may not seam to board, you would have to take it out a lot, and hold it and pet it, and let it run around some where where it cant get into too much mischif.

You dont NEED 2 rats, its just best. to be able to not have 2 rats you need to play with your one rat alot. (Say, 1 1/2 - 3 hours a day) I have 1  rat and she is perfectly happy.

And on rat cages....... you could make one! just get like a small bookshelf  and chicken wire. look on google or yahoo, and search for homemade rat cages.

And if you decide that you need to get one more rat, to convince your mom just make a deal, thats what I did. I told my mom that if she let me get a rat I would pay for food and bedding and clean her cage myself.

Get another rat around the same age and the same gender. If you could get another from the same litter then you should.

Buy a cheap tank from walmart as a temp. and then work on saving some money for a new one. 1. Sell the old one and anything else you have to sell. 2. Do chores for money. 3. Babysit/walk dogs/etc. for money. 4. Get a job (if you are old enough).

Having two won't hurt her anymore then one will so you need to keep your one happy. A tank isn't wonderful but if it is bigger then you cage then you should get one for TEMP!

I got one that was like $100 the rat tower and it is a great size. For 2 rats you could go a little smaller (I have 4).
